This novel is a fictional account of the life of William Jacklin, a real life third fleet convict in 1791, who rose from the hell of his incarceration to become a respected settler on the Hawkesbury River.
Fictional in that Jacklin's pathway through history and the historical background of the story is accurate but the incidents along the way are conjecture which are dramatised to provide a compelling story.
The reader will encounter tragedy, cruelty, avarice, rape, murder and social injustice, but also triumph, compassion, self sacrifice, love, bravery and a desire to make a haven from
what was meant to be a prison.
